Position Summary: 

 

The Senior Underwriter is responsible in directing the underwriting department with planning and marketing activities including development of underwriting guidelines, establishment of department objectives and procedures for underwriting analysis, production, and staff management. The Senior Underwriter also evaluates and authorizes all business referred by underwriting staff, recommends levels of underwriting authority, and provides guidance in interpreting and applying underwriting policy.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Develops and monitors the company’s underwriting philosophies, strategies and their implementation including lines of business, products and services.
  • Manages and oversee existing key clients relationships at an executive and corporate level
  • Ensures that marketing intelligence is collected, centralized, communicated and acted upon by the underwriting staff to identify and develop business opportunities for the company.
  • Ensures client recognition and servicing, as well as determining client needs and new products.
  • Performs underwriting analysis of potential clients by conducting analyses of their experience, exposure, management, rates, coverage, financial market and competitors in order to determine profit potential.
  • Markets reinsurance services to current and prospective clients through sales meetings, industry membership, participation in seminars, industry events and speeches to gain profitable portfolios and foster positive relationships

  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels in the company
  • Ability to manage both support staff and client relations
  • Maintain confidentiality of company-sensitive data
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment
  • Keep supervisor informed of activities and situations which will impact the achievement of corporate and department goals and objectives
  • Perform other related duties as required to achieve the goals and objectives of the company and department.
  • Ability to travel frequently

 

Education and Experience: 

 

  • College degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the reinsurance industry as it pertains to coverages, rate making process, risk exposures and contracts. 
  • Minimum of 5 years in (re)insurance
